What do you believe is the purpose of a college education?
I think the purpose of a college education is to gain knowledge in one or a couple specific areas. If a person doesn't know what they want to do in the future, they can take classes to explore different career paths and choose the one they like best. Once a person figures out what they want to do in their future, they go to college to learn all about that topic and become an expert with it. Once they complete their college education, they go out in the world and look for a job pertaining to their studied major.
What does it mean to be educated?
To me, being educated means that a person has the will and internal motivation to learn new things. Every person can be educated in their own way. They can know information about a lot of different topics, or they could know a lot of information about only a couple topics. A person can not become educated if they don't truly want to be. They can sit through high school and college classes all they want, but if they don't want to learn, they won't. A person can memorize all the information they need to know for one test and do well, but then forget everything a couple days later. Therefore, they did not truly learn the material they studied and it is no longer a art of their knowledge.
What experiences have you had with education that led you to this belief?
My personal high school experience led me to think of education the way I currently do. I have always had a passion for science, and I enjoyed math because I was good at it. I did not really enjoy social studies, language arts, or reading as I went through school. I was a straight A student all throughout high school, however I did that they way I described before. I would only study materials for the test and forget them after the test was over. Since I actually enjoyed math and science, I actually studied the materials and commit them to my memory even after the test was over.
